Replacing Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are two of the most important safety devices in your home. They provide early warning in the event of a fire or dangerous carbon monoxide buildup, giving your family valuable time to respond. Like any safety equipment, these devices don’t last forever. Knowing when to replace them—and how to maintain them—can help keep your home protected.

How Long Do Smoke Detectors Last?

Most smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years, even if they still appear to be working. Over time, the internal sensors become less reliable and may not detect smoke as quickly or accurately.

To find the age of your smoke detector, remove it from its mounting bracket and look for the manufacturing date printed on the back or inside the unit. If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s time for a replacement.

How Long Do Carbon Monoxide Detectors Last?

Carbon monoxide detectors typically have a shorter lifespan than smoke detectors. Most should be replaced every 5 to 10 years, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Many newer CO detectors display an end-of-life warning or emit a specific chirping pattern when it’s time to replace the unit. Always follow the replacement guidelines provided for your specific model.

Test Your Detectors Monthly

Replacing detectors on schedule is important, but regular testing is just as critical.

Once a month:

● Press the test button to confirm the alarm sounds.

● Make sure everyone in the home recognizes the alarm.

● Check that each detector is securely mounted.

● Clear away dust or debris that could interfere with the sensors.

A monthly test only verifies that the electronics and alarm are functioning—it doesn’t extend the detector’s lifespan.

Replace Batteries Regularly

If your detectors use replaceable batteries, install fresh batteries at least once a year or whenever the unit indicates a low battery.

Some newer models feature sealed, long-life batteries that are designed to last for the life of the detector. When these units reach the end of their service life, the entire detector should be replaced.

Where Should Detectors Be Installed?

For the best protection, install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the right locations throughout your home.

Smoke Detectors

Install smoke detectors:

● Inside every bedroom

● Outside each sleeping area

● On every level of your home, including the basement

● Near stairways and common living areas

Avoid placing smoke detectors directly next to bathrooms, kitchens, or HVAC vents, where steam or airflow may cause nuisance alarms.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Install carbon monoxide detectors:

● Outside sleeping areas

● On every floor of your home

● Near attached garages

● Close to fuel-burning appliances, following the manufacturer’s installation instructions

Proper placement helps ensure the earliest possible warning if carbon monoxide is present.

Signs It’s Time to Replace a Detector

Even if your detector hasn’t reached its recommended replacement age, it may need to be replaced if you notice:

● Frequent false alarms

● Failure to respond during testing

● Yellowing or damaged plastic housing

● Water damage

● An end-of-life warning or chirping that continues after replacing the battery

● Physical damage from impact or age

If you’re unsure whether a detector is still reliable, replacing it is the safest choice.

Why Replacing Detectors Matters

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are your home’s first line of defense against two serious hazards.

Replacing outdated units helps:

● Improve early warning during emergencies

● Increase your family’s safety

● Meet current safety recommendations

● Reduce the risk of detector failure

● Provide peace of mind

Considering the relatively low cost of replacement, it’s one of the most important home maintenance tasks you can perform.

Professional Installation Makes a Difference

Proper placement and installation are essential for detectors to work effectively. A professional can:

● Install detectors in recommended locations

● Replace outdated units

● Mount hardwired or battery-powered detectors securely

● Test each detector after installation

● Ensure your home has the proper number of detectors for maximum protection

Keep Your Home Safe

Regularly replacing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors is a simple but essential part of home maintenance. Combined with monthly testing and routine battery replacement, properly functioning detectors help protect your family from fire and carbon monoxide emergencies.

If you need help replacing outdated detectors, installing additional units, or completing other home safety upgrades, professional installation ensures your home is equipped with reliable protection for years to come.
